As of now, Responders First is not deploying any camera systems at fire stations until we are given an all-clear by command staff. Note that at NO TIME do we have access to cameras once a system is set up.
Camera Systems/Fire Stations
We take firefighter safety and privacy seriously. When firefighters respond to calls, sirens announce their departure, making it obvious to the public that the station is temporarily unoccupied. Unfortunately, this creates opportunities for theft, vandalism, or trespassing.
While cameras are an effective deterrent, we recognize they come with inherent privacy concerns. When we assist in installing camera systems, we are exceptionally careful to respect the needs of individual firefighters, the City, and the Union.
We have selected Eufy security cameras for these installations because they allow us to configure the system for strict local privacy.
Key Features and Safeguards
-
Local Video Storage Only: All recordings are stored locally on a hard drive at the station. No footage is automatically transmitted to or stored in the cloud.
-
Text-Only Alerts (No Cloud Images): To ensure total privacy, we configure the system to send “Text Only” alerts (e.g., “Motion Detected”). We strictly disable “Rich Notifications,” ensuring that not even a thumbnail image is processed by external servers.
-
Short Retention Period: The system is configured for a rolling recording window. Video footage is automatically overwritten every 24 to 48 hours. This ensures the system remains a tool for immediate security awareness rather than a long-term historical record.
-
On-Site Viewing Only: Video feeds can only be viewed from the dedicated control panel located inside the station. There is no remote access for members, the public, the City, or our organization. Even firefighters assigned to other shifts cannot view live or recorded video while off-duty.
-
No Public Record: Because the equipment is owned by Responders First LA (a 501(c)(4) nonprofit) and the footage is deleted daily, the video does not become a permanent City record.
Privacy Protocols
-
Station Interior & Recreational Areas: We strongly advise against the use of internal cameras of any kind. We will not install, fund, or approve cameras inside living quarters, dorms, gyms, or near firepits/patios. Systems are designed strictly for exterior views of the station perimeter.
-
Public Masking: To protect the privacy of neighbors, we utilize “privacy masking” features. Public areas (sidewalks, streets) and neighboring private properties are digitally blocked from view; only station buildings and grounds are monitored.
Chain of Command Respecting the chain of command is paramount. Responders First LA will only accept installation requests and coordinate logistics with Station Captains or higher-ranking command staff.
